| Knowing
Christ is where the Christian begins and ends, so this is the
first course in the Life Journey Discipleship Cycle. It is required
as part of our membership orientation. It should also be the first
course taken by current members as they grow as disciples of Jesus.
The course develops a relationship with Christ as found in scripture,
the teachings of the Church, prayer, the community of faith, Baptism,
and Eucharist.
Serving
Christ
is about discovering your life in Christ. Each Christian has been
uniquely gifted by God for ministry. The course introduces spiritual
gifts, as well as personal styles and passions – all for the
purpose of connecting to ministry opportunities in God's kingdom.
Growing
in Christ teaches us how to strengthen our relationship with
Christ. Each session of this discussion-oriented course discusses
an important "mark" of Christian discipleship: scripture
reading, prayer, small groups, tithing, justice and service. Growing
in Christ builds the nurturing base necessary to serve for a lifetime
as Jesus' disciple.
Sharing
Christ helps disciples discuss their call to be witnesses in
the world and to brainstorm styles and strategies for doing so.
The mission of the Church is to reach people with the love of Jesus
Christ. How disciples do that is determined by their unique gifts,
passions, styles and opportunities, but it requires intentionality.
Here's a chance to wrestle with the big questions of how we share
the love of Christ with others.

Where
do I begin? Ideally, everyone starts with Knowing Christ and
works their way through the Life Journey cycle. Our goal is to develop
a healthy, nurtured and equipped disciple of Jesus. Depending upon
where you are in your personal spiritual journey, you may want to
discuss changing the order in which you participate.
I
can't come to all the sessions! While you are always invited,
it may not be productive to miss the majority of a course. We do
break for major holidays and festivals, but no one knows your schedule
as you do. As a general rule, aim to attend every session. If you
miss one, you'll survive that. If you have to miss two, you'll have
missed a third of the entire course. The learning and the discussion
process are cumulative – like any recipe, you can change a
few things, but you don't want to leave too much out.
And
when I've completed all four courses? Then bring someone into
the discipleship journey by attending Knowing Christ with them and
beginning all over again. Each course is discussion-oriented, so
even if the material stays the same, the discussion will be different
with different participants. Each course, whether you take it for
the first time or the tenth time, is a chance to grow closer to
God and in community with other disciples of Jesus.
